Dark Captain are what dreams are made of; that greasy combination of stilted beauty, raw emotion, and sensual facial hair. Their album Dead Legs and Alibis made me weep at its gorgeous harmonies, it lush soundscapes and its onion stench.

Big Mean Sound Machine Interview » Math Rock: Coldplay/Maroon 5 is to black people as Alicia Keys/John Legend is to white people Math Rock is a new column, which is really sort of a gimmick column I guess; the goal is to put forth an outlandish statement and try to prove it right via logic, science or mathematics. Math Rock itself is just a catchy name AND a shitty genre of music.
In our inaugural column I will try to prove that Coldplay/Maroon 5 is to black people as Alicia Keys/John Legend is to white people.
Sure this statement alone seems somewhat outlandish, predictably dickish and potentially racist which is sort of the goal of our Math Rock column, but when dissected there is more to the statement than meets the eye. You see both groupings of artists are cultural jumping off points; they seem to be the gateway for people not entirely interested in music/pop culture to connect with the other through music/pop culture. Outside of sports, music/pop culture, at least to me, seem to be the easiest way to ease into a conversation with a total stranger. It brings you just beyond... |
Laugh At What I Love - Jazz Fusion It's very possible that Jazz Fusion (other than the obvious "World Music") may be the most hated and misunderstood genre of music, and for good reason. It's for nerds only. Well, nerds and sensitive middle aged white dudes with long hair. Fortunately for me, I have a genius-level IQ and perfectly understand it... "genius level IQ" being code for the fact that I used to smoke a TON of weed and ate the occasional bag of mushrooms before I realized I was too old for that shit.
I used to hang out with a b-boy crew in the mid to late 90's and got into what us hip-hop types call "digging". Basically we went to used record stores and with little or no prior knowledge of the artists we were checking out and blindly bought albums in the hopes that we would find a nice break or sample to dance over. When you're baked out of your mind and come across the cover of Herbie Hancock's Sextant LP for $2.00, it's kind of hard to pass up. This was... |
fiN - Once In A Life Time While recording our album in a disused shelving factory in Wadsworth, London, we listened to loads of old records for inspiration. We must have played 'Once in a lifetime' a thousand times. There where countless conversations about covering it so when Tim asked for a track we knew what it had to be.
Talking Heads are a band that we've taken influence from in so many ways. We hope we've done the song justice!

Stop Sleeping - Etta James Last Friday (January 20th, 2012) surprised me.
I was caught off guard when I read that Etta James had passed away. Last I heard, she was released from the hospital and going to make a full recovery and live for fucking ever. Hearing that someone died after hearing they were on the mend sucks balls. Even worse, I have thought about her quite a lot since learning of her recent illness. I'm not a religious man by any sense of the word, but I threw my appreciation for her into the wind hoping she'd get the Fuck out the funk more in the past month than I have in the past ten years.
I think what I was most weirded out about was the few things most people recognize Etta James for. You say Etta James and people either mention the old wedding or jewelry commercial standby At Last, a sample in a recent Pitbull track, or that Le7els track that Del loves so much.
None of you have ever listened to Etta James on your own? None of you pressed play... |
Stop Sleeping - Adele's 19 2011 was Adele’s year. Her sophomore album, 21, is probably still topping the charts, and as a result she’s the only artist to ever sell 3 million albums in the UK in a year. To do that in the middle of the internet age is remarkable. She is the first artist to chart two top 5 singles and two top 5 albums simultaneously since 1964, when the Beatles did it. 21 is the longest running number one album by a UK female solo artist ever. She’s also pretty good at singing.
So inevitably, once people played 21 through for the hundredth time, they were looking for more. In the UK, these rational people simply went out and bought 19 if they hadn’t heard it before. In the states, people had a tendency to ask me questions. “How is her first album?” “Is it like 21?” “Will I like it?” “Does it have Chasing Pavements on it?” None of these questions were important, but I answered them just the same, and sent everybody... |
